Children’s Editorial Photographer: Kid Magazine Issue 19

I love being a children’s editorial photographer! What can I say? Working with gorgeous kids, fun fashion and lovely people just makes me happy. So happy.

If you are a regular reader of the Le CoCo Photography blog you would know that kids fashion photography and children’s editorial photography is my passion. You might also know that I am now the officially appointed photographer for Kid Magazine Australia, which is amazing!

Last issue we shot a fun-in-the-sun summer theme editorial, you can check it out here. This month when Editor & Chief ‘Kid’ Sara Keli told me she wanted to ‘celebrate the beauty of traditional childhood’ I was excited. What Sara wanted to achieve was real kids playing real kid games – you know the old-school, low-budget, down-and-dirty style fun that we (if you are over 25!) all grew up doing. No iPods or fancy toys in sight – and I was chuffed with that!

Firstly, I secretly consider myself to be a hopscotch champion but secondly I am super-enthusiastic to see children be out of doors and being kids. So Sara’s message for this shoot really resonated with me. The shoot was entitled ‘Kids @ Play!’

What I love about this shoot is lots of things;

  • The happiness is contagious. It’s real and you can see the models really enjoyed themselves.
  • The clothes are relaxed and accessible and Sara pulled together lots of gorgeous looks perfect for after school play. (I’ll link you to my picks of the brands at the end!)
  • However what I think is really successful about this shoot is that it shows you can shoot beautiful children’s editorial photography without lots of props and styling. It’s a great example of a basic-budget shoot that allows the clothes to be centre stage. Many of my clients love super-styled shoots and lots of props (and hey, who doesn’t!? I know I do!) but it’s also wonderful to show an example that proves you don’t always need the bells and whistles.

As a children’s editorial and fashion photographer I think that’s a really strong take away point for emerging brands. Don’t be afraid to let the clothes do their own talking. As a photographer I will always work with you to create whatever you dream of – big or small – but less can definitely be more!

Congratulations Sara on another issue of Kid Magazine. If you aren’t checking out this free, online magazine you definitely should be. From motherhood to shopping, self-care to child-care it’s an enjoyable read with a sense of humour for any parent.

I’d be remiss now to mention some of my favourite pieces from the Kids @ Play shoot… loving the girls gear from Target, bargains from Big W, cuteness from Acorn Kids, great basics from Cotton on Kids and that pop of yellow by Eenimeeni – there’s plenty more so please click through for full credits.
